Sikkim - novice update
Sikkim's not on the world's radar. It's 45 x 60 miles of high terrain awkwardly inserted between much bigger players of Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan. But it's been in the news recently, more than it's been since 1975 when India dethroned the King and declared its 22nd state.
A map of Asia, better a map of the Himalayas, and find the kingdom (Darjeeling and go north, or Assam and go west). In the same way that China in 1959 wasn't idly interested in Tibet, India - Indira Ghandi specifically, wasn't passingly intrested in securing a tiny kingdom. Location...
And now the two great Asian powers shook hands the other week. China recognized India's right to rule Sikkim, and India, in turn, recognized China's sovereignity of Tibet. Cases closed and ancient trade route - the Netua La Pass - opened.
Trade trumps all.
