Bugs, bats and swimming holes
So, barring the unforeseen and ugly, I have a house.
Bid accepted on Monday and - pause, breathe - I accepted a fat bid on my own apartment on Tuesday. The karmic give/take was peacable.
Went up to see Clermont House (my house - needs name or better reference) on Thursday. Met with Bug Busters inspector then general inspector and both had generally good reports, nothing shocking lurking in basement of 1850 house, bats in barn's eaves but they eat insects, carpenter ants here and there but they're standard issue, honey bees in the tree by the road but they're almost charming.
Here she is. Lots and lots of so-so photos: http://www.kodakgallery.com/BrowsePhotos.jsp?&collid=548478264205
While inspector explored house's innards, Bill and I explored nearest village: Germantown. Will read up on town's history - why German in midst of mostly Dutch-settled valley. Brave and obstinate teautonic tribe...
Tiny town. Big ugly high school, one very pretty church (and one ugly one), shop/butcher/deli/coffee place with display of fresh pies and huge stand of Chimay/Duvel beers, a piano store, a restaurant (open Thurs-Sun), package store, antiques/asian crap store (closed), what else?
We pushed outwards and discovered the town swimming hole with snack stand and two lifeguards (refreshing to see tax money doing civic duty) then down to the river where there's a flagpole, little grilling spot, picnic table and place to launch boats from.
And there's a library cum town hall cum something else.
Small town small town.
I'm excited. I want to landscape and volunteer and attend little league games.
