Subaru: a girl's first car
Upstate default vehicle, liberal's SUV.
Subaru shopping Saturday – R and Christian as beards so I was undercover as city girl with next-to-no driving experience test driving automatics on a small lot (in the rain).
Subaru man un-fooled:
“We get a lot of you folks – pick em up from the station.”
Pauses (looks at me pointedly), “and some don't even have their licenses.”
Slanting sheets of rain across Colonial Subaru of Kingston's lot. We started on wrong foot in that we were there, it's pouring, and I'm not shopping for 2006. And, really, no one test drives cars in the rain.
But managed to further downgrade my cause when I steered search from secondhand Outbacks with under 20,000 miles (@ $20,000) to “any Forrester that's not white” (less than $15,000).
Finally, he just left us to wander and went inside. If a car intrigued (lots did), one of us had to go fetch the keys.
Left without a car – next assault on a dealer across the George Washington Bridge this weekend.
