Of gardens

Sacred lilly reflected w/ fish - from Sunday's visit to Brooklyn Botanical Gardens with Dad, Sarah and R.

Gardens nice and extensive but desperately need tending-to, raking and dead-heading (+ bug issues, leaves lace-like), cafe food excellent, hearty and fairly priced, views of park-surrounding buildings above tree-lines disconcerting, mix of visitors (Hasidic + Hispanic + African-American + camp crowds) impeccably diverse.

Had imagined it would be slightly more exquisite but have been spoiled by the Asticou Gardens of Maine - which start off with the unfair advantage of being on a Maine island vs. in central Brooklyn. And probably receive the bulk of funding from Rockefellers vs. tax payers. And Asticou foot traffic limited to the soft step of garden-adoring summer people vs. the outdoors-seeking residents of Brooklyn.

Don't know a thing about planting and have already become a garden snob.

When my bed's borders are ragged and my day lillies drooping, this will surely return to haunt me.
