It gets worse from there
A hotel, in Revere, in my smoking room, a very long way from Maine.
As if to drive home that re-acclimatizing would be painful, things went screwy from off the driveway. Maine saying - you know, it's not like here out there. This is rustic? Take another look at what you've come to think of as civilization and re-asses.
Traffic, via the one-lane bottle neck that is the sole route from Mt Desert to Bangor Maine, crept.
Bangor airport jarring (all those people, signs) but still comforting in that it was Maine and the fellow who runs the gift shop wore a tie and liked my driftwood.
In Boston, reality of real life crashed in. Surrounded by suits on laptops, blackberries and cell phones, watched the 3:30 shuttle to New York leave at 8:30 and my 8:30 get summarily canceled, "due to weather". Didn't stop my luggage which continued on its way and reached laguardia.
American carriers don't pay for hotel or even spot for a drink ticket if cancellation is "due to weather" - Despite R reporting clear skies over the city.
So, paying $240 a night at a mid-tier Sheraton, 10 miles from Logan and situated at the far end of a stip mall's parking lot (I have a view). Tried other (closer, cheaper, prettier) hotels but they were full (saw a sign for a Barbie Convention but that can't be right).
And I got a smoking room which, even as a sometimes smoker, revolts and spins you back to another (smokier) decade.
On the 6am tomorrow so make it in time for jury duty. Wish I could bill this to someone. Really, just wish I could stay in Maine.
